His Majesty's Consul-General, Canton,
reports es follows.
Begins.
Students and labourers were peacefully
demonstrating along canal on June 23rd when
persons believed to be students of Whampoa
military college suddenly opened fire on Shame en
Island killing at least one French citizen and
wounding some British subjects. As I had to
take cover I did not see what actually happened
afterwards. British blue-jackets discharged
their rifles when they saw officer and myself
under fire but this was immediately stopped.

Acting Inspector-General of Customs informs
me his commissioner, Mr. Edward, was slightly
wounded. He has received telegram dated today
stating that Canton Government maintain incident
was caused by foreigners in Shemeen, that situation is now highly critical, that women
and children are to be evacuated and that Hongkong is to send troops. I have approved his proposal
to collect Canton Customs at Kowloon if Hongkong
authorities have no objection.
Situation at Amoy now reported threatening and British, American and Japanese Consuls have asked Kaval authorities for ships.
